P2 - Developed Ideas
Final Idea
The idea that I have chosen to take forward for the script is Episode 4. Saying No. This is because I think it best suits the intended purpose of the script, which is to peak the interest of the target audience as per the client brief. There is plenty of tension and action in the extract, which is exciting to watch for an audience, as well as expository scenes to give the audience context to Alex's world. My other developed idea for Episode 1 did have more context and exposition to give the audience a better idea of how Alex's situation began, but it lacked in tension or excitement so the audience may become disinterested in the series. Showing more of an action-packed extract would better engage the audience and give them a better impression of the series overall.
The target audience of the series is predominantly young men interested in technology. The extract appeals to that demographic in several ways, from the cyber crime theme of the series to the exciting use of pyrotechnics. The crime genre itself appeals to the target audience through it's genre conventions such as mystery, the protagonist's conflict with authority, city setting and of course organised crime.
I think that the strongest part of the narrative in this extract is the arson scene and surrounding sequences, as it places the protagonist in a dangerous and unfamiliar situation that he may not be able to get out of; this feeling is projected to the audience to make them feel the same tension and danger Alex feels. The extract will also end on a cliff-hanger when the police arrive at Alex's apartment, which serves to intrigue the audience about what could happen next, further investing them in the narrative and incentivising them to watch the series in it's entirety if it were to go into production.
