M1 - Discuss the Strengths and Weaknesses of my Ideas
Idea 1:
Strengths:
-The show has a relatable protagonist who the target audience would be able to sympathise with, which is important for audience engagement and audience pleasures (Personal Identity & Relationships)
-The Cyber crime theme and story concept is strong and would be interesting to watch
-Good application of narrative theory in relation to the idea, such as Propp's character functions, Todorov's narrative stages and Levi-strauss' theory of binary opposition.
-The idea fits with BBC3's style and ethos, since it makes use of modern concepts like technology, uses young characters in lead roles and has modern themes of moral ambiguity.
Weaknesses:
-The idea of a hacking-themed tv show has been done before (such as Mr. Robot), which could harm the show's prospects of being unique and could cause the audience to feel as though it's just some knock-off of more popular shows based around the topic.
Opportunities:
-The show could be filmed in local areas, since the physical locations used in the show are quite basic and modest. This would help with budgeting and cut down on production costs.
-The use of online characters who are not shown in person will help to keep the cast small, which would save money on hiring actors or allow the actors which are hired to be more skilled and expensive. Not many older actors will be needed either, which also saves money.
Threats:
-A potential threat to production would be possible budgeting issues with the use of lots of computer equipment and potential CGI hacking scenes, so the show may need to be toned down in order to avoid overspending,
Idea 2:
Strengths:
-This idea is even more relatable to the target audience due to the school setting and student cast, which also fits BBC3's style and ethos.
Weaknesses:
-The use of narrative is ok, but the storyline is underdeveloped and there is no clear story for the series overall, which could make the show boring and uneventful.
Opportunities:
-The use of a majority young cast will be relatively inexpensive compared to hiring older actors, which works for a low budget.
-The show has no fancy locations, events or content that would require cgi or expensive equipment which will save money on production costs.
Threats:
-Setting the show in a school could be problematic for production, since the school would need to be vacated or other accommodations made which could threaten the budget.
Idea 3:
Strengths:
-This idea also fits with BBC3's ethos, with the inclusion of modern issues and themes.
-The added flair of a 2010 setting makes the show more unique and interesting, which could help to draw audiences in.
Weaknesses:
-The storyline is rather clichéd, and not very interesting. Not much happens and it would be difficult to turn the story into an entire tv series, since it more suits a film duration.
Opportunities:
-Like the other ideas, this show could quite easily be produced at a relatively low cost due to the simple setting and story, with no need for fancy cgi or equipment to produce the show.
Threats:
-The representation and theme of racism should be approached very carefully, since it could be criticised as a show made by a white man.
